Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
